What is reiki? 

The Japanese word Reiki means 'Universal Energy'. The practise of Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. 

Reiki is a natural healing life force energy that is activated by intention and can support you on many levels, physical, emotional and spiritual.  Eastern  medicine has always recognised and worked with energy which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. In Japan this energy is known as 'Ki', in China it is 'Chi' and India it is 'Prana'.  Acupuncture, tai chi and yoga are also based around this free flow of life force energy that is within every person. 

Is reiki safe?

Reiki is a gentle yet powerful process.  It is completely non-invasive and can be used with confidence alongside other health treatments.  Reiki is not however an alternative to conventional medicine, therefore you should always consult your GP about acute, infectious conditions or problems of an urgent nature. 

Reiki can be adapted to most medical conditions and can be used safely by people of all ages including, new born babies, children, pregnant mothers, surgical patients and the elderly.  It can even be applied to animals! 

What happens during a session?

A Reiki treatment is a non-manipulative process and as such no pressure is applied to your body.  The sessions are usually carried out with the recipient sitting or laying in a comfortable position in a peaceful environment. There is no need to remove any clothing whilst the treatment takes place.  The Reiki Practitioner will place their hands gently on or over the recipients body moving around the body.  It can be carried out directly or from a distance.  

Reiki may be experienced by the recipient as a flow of energy, warmth or coolness, mild tingling or nothing at all, it varies for each person.  

Prior to the treatment a short discussion about personal health and well-being and treatment options will take place.  A treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you which can be reviewed and amended as necessary in line with your own preferences. 

The length of reiki sessions can vary but are usually offered in 30 or 60 minute sessions. 

What are the benefits?

Reiki helps by encouraging deep relaxation whilst bringing balance to our mind and emotions.  It promotes a calm and peaceful sense of well-being.  This can be of great help during times of illness or stress. 

Reiki can encourage and support positive personal choices and adopt a greater personal inner harmony and balance to life's challenges.  In  this deep relaxed state you are more able to connect with your intuition and may feel guided to improve diet, exercise more, rest, engage in leisure activities or feel less need for alcohol, tobacco or other harmful substances.  

Reiki can enhance every day living and regular sessions can help to promote development of a healthier and more resourceful state of being.
